You will never be forgotten Andy. We love you. Our thoughts are with your family.

Official Statement: HONOLULU - (November 2, 2010) -- The world of surfing mourns an incredibly sad loss today with the news that Hawaii's Andy Irons has died. Andy was a beloved husband, and a true champion. Irons, 32,withdrew from a professional surfing event in Puerto Rico last weekend due to illness and passed away during a layover en-route to his home in Kauai, Hawaii. He had reportedly been battling with dengue fever, a viral disease. At this time the family thanks his friends and fans for their support, and asks that the community respect its privacy. The family also asks to not be contacted so their focus can remain on one another during this time of profound loss.

It is with deep sadness that Billabong has learned of the news of Andy Irons’ passing. Andy was one of the greatest surfers of our time. More than that, he was a much loved son, a devoted husband and a soon-to-be father. The thoughts of all Billabong employees worldwide are with wife Lyndie and Andy’s family at this most devastating time.

5 AI's death is tragic, disheartening. I offer deep appreciation to a family for proudly surrounding and guiding a most remarkable life, and may they survive memories of a man who befriended many and inspired even more. I will reflect upon every video/photo of AI with humble admiration, and foremost with deep sorrow for being denied seeing another arc of spray, thrown of great volume to great distance, with magnificent force and beauty across the face of wave ridden by the masterful surfer-AI.

4. It takes more than asking questions as to whether someone may be in dire need of attention, it takes proving to yourself that you would go the distance to protect a stranger in a manner that you would demand be offered to you. A.I. had a family thousands of miles from him, it pangs me to know that just one person, any single individual he encountered on his journey back home, could have applied a degree of compassion and basic clinical/medical awareness to help ensure AI reached his family.

When we see athletes like A.I. pulling into massive, beyond this world waves in Hawaii, Tahiti, & Indo- we view them as supermen, but they are not when pulled out of their element. They are as exposed as anyone to an indiscriminate world of threats to health and wellbeing. As a community, each and every one of us, if we see someone in pain, we detect absence of good health - suspect illness; then we are obligated to be Good Samaritans -holding steadfast to a principle of protecting all people.

2. I am bewildered at such a tragic loss of life and earnestly believe, if AI’s primary cause of death is found to be lack of supportive care and basic interventions used to treat sequela of Dengue Fever and/or DHF: a failure in public health needs to be investigated. I am concerned why the ASP Medical Director, physician diagnosing AI in PR, Surf Industry Sponsors, and other members of medical and/or surf community did not recongnize an individual in an acute state of illness.

To the entire Irons Ohana; Lyndie, Phil, Bruce, and Mother Irons; Andy was and will always be regarded as an exemplary athlete, a gifted natural talent, and consummate competitor who inspired the best out of his fellow surfers in heats and during free-surf sessions, and above all a remarkable human being of the highest order.

I offer my sincerest condolences and may the promise of a healthy child carrying AI's legacy assuage the profound grief so unfairly forced upon a family to endure.

I'm I the only one who is outraged here ? Rest in Peace ? If there is an after life Andy is pissed right now !! He was a millionaire, had a hot wife and kid on the way, you think he planned on being miserable, alone and dead in a Dallas hotel room, I don't think so, somebodys head is gonna roll but whos?
Ryan Oceanside said (2 years ago)
Exactly Scott !! Even doctors have commented, who let him leave in Florida where he was on a IV drip? What a**hole that didn't let him board from Dallas to Kuai b/c he was too sick and let him go to a hotel room and not call 911 to send him to a hospital a lot of people in control f'ed up big time !

It's a sad time for the surfing world but there are many questions to be answered. Why was he alone? where was his Manager? Sponsor? All must have known he was dealing with a terrible illness but left to fly alone by himself. Somebody needs to step up in the ASP and change the travel Rules and Regulations. Tragic loss of a great human being. RIP Andy!

Andy, you achieved everything you set out to and then some.
You always handled yourself with dignity and approached life like you did your surfing — no holes barred.
I'll miss your fearless approach and charismatic nature.
I was fortunate enough to meet you at Bells and witnessed you on many occasions tear the place to pieces. People were so thrilled when you set foot on the Beach and you always had time for your fans.

You are a legend and were a massive influence on my life.
RIP Andy - Andrew
