Who or what inspires you?
My family and friends and all the people who have made a living out of surfing. All the chargers from back in the 50’s and 60’s.
Had any problems with the law? Never
Who will be world champ in 10 years time, Why?
Occy, there is going to be another comeback.
What is the craziest thing you have ever witnessed?
Andy’s massive Alley oop that he did in the expression session on the Gold Coast. I was amazed.
How would you describe your surfing?
I’m not very good at airs and that sort of stuff but I’d like to learn how to do them. I also like fast driving turns that are on rail.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Hopefully in the top 45 doing well. Traveling the world having heaps of fun and surfing sick waves with sick surfers.
What would you do if you weren’t a surfer?
Try and do well at Tennis. I love playing Tennis and there is heaps of money to win in it.
Hassling is?
Unfortunately part of competitive surfing . It’s the worst way to be knocked out of a heat. I wish there was a system of competitive surfing with no hassling involved besides the WCT.
Early morning surf or chilled 11am wake up?
In between. I love sleeping but I can’t sleep any later than 8am. If I do, I get really annoyed with myself, I wish waking up was easier.
Who is Heath Joske?
Another unique pint-sized individual, young Heath is a country boy with a passion for simplicity and purity. A non-judgemental cruiser, quietly confident and content, the young natural footer strives to dwell in the blessings and peace of his born-again Christianity. His soulful determination extends with perseverance to many corners of both his constitution and existence. Though he is a committed vegetarian, Heath throws spray like a beefy footballer storms up the footy field, powerful and gritty. Throw a contest jersey on him, and you'll see the turbo kick in, his forehand cutback a repetitive danger on any wall heading right.
Born and raised at Valla, 10 minutes drive inland from the coast around Coffs Harbour, Heath comes with a sound surfing heritage, his elder brother Sage (also a Billabong team rider) having tested the waters before him, and their father before that. With his father shaping his boards, there was not much chance of escaping the family thread and preoccupation with the surfing lifestyle. Pursuing his destiny at a comfortable pace, Heath is one of those characters who will routinely accomplish goals with an inner confidence that is rare for someone his age. A well-adjusted individual who can blow the back out of any wall, or challenge in life.
He took out the 2005 O & E Byron Bay Classic junior final, an all Billabong affair, beating fellow team riders Laurie Towner, Brad King and Ellis Ericson. Along the way he also the claimed the only 10 point ride and also the highest heat score of the event. Results seem to be flowing for Heath. Since his 2002 Rusty Gromfest title he has steadily remained high in the ranks of contests and more recently the Billabong Pro-Teen series.
Emerging victorious as the ’05 U/18 New South Wales champion, Heath’s reputation has continued to grow, giving his competitors serious cause for concern. This was reflected in Australia’s Surfing Life magazines annual Hottest 100 Awards. Voted for the greater part by his peers Joske wound up in 21st, outranking some of Australia’s hottest juniors in the process. Closing the 2006 Australiasian Junior Series in an admirable 15th position, Heath entered 2007 a firm favourite for the top ten.
The future is glowing brightly for Heath Joske.
